(If you read the title and understood the Taylor Swift reference, we can be friends). I've started a bit of a movement in 2nd grade... an army of Swifties! I am a huge Taylor Swift fan, and have been since she started back in 2006. Teachers in District 68 are always encouraged to share their passions with students, and this is one that I've shown my students this year. Back in December, my class celebrated Taylor Swift's birthday, and my students are still talking about what a fun day that was, so I figured this would be a good day to write about.
On December 13th, we had an entire Taylor Swift themed day! We still did our normal subjects, but just incorporated things about her and her music throughout the day. In reading, the students read biographies about her life. We answered word problems in math about her life. We wrote about Taylor Swift. Plus, we played Kahoot for trivia questions, and even wrote "13" on our hands.
Not only did I have a great day, but it was so fun to see the students excited as well. Whether or not they like Taylor Swift, all students love to connect with their teacher and everyone had a great time. We all got to build relationships that day, because now students know a lot more about me and my personal interests. While that is one of my personal passions, I love learning about their passions as well!
