Decomposing Fractions in Remote Learning

Hands-On Manipulatives

In the virtual classroom, creating an engaging and interactive environment is key for students' learning. The virtual environment, while different from a physical classroom, can provide a dynamic platform for interactive learning, On the most recent e-learning days, 4th graders began decomposing fractions using digital tools.

In absence of the physical manipulatives we use in the classroom, students used digital fraction tiles on Braining Camp to show their learning. Braining Camp allows students to virtually move and manipulate fractions, reinforcing their understanding through visual and interactive experiences. Even in the digital domain, this hands-on approach enhances students' comprehension on the concept and makes it more accessible.

Lesson Example

For the first live lesson, students learned how to decompose a fraction using a tape diagram, addition sentence and multiplication. The picture above is the problem I modeled for students before doing one together.

Student Template

After each live lesson, students work independently and apply their new knowledge. On the first e-learning day, 4th graders decomposed two fractions in the template above. Once completed, students used their technology skills to submit their assignment. Fourth graders  learned how to download their work as an image, then upload as a file on Google Classroom!

On the second e-learning day, students decomposed 1 whole into fourths.
