Over the last 2 weeks, first grade has been creating and writing about elves and their adventures. We started by rolling a dice and following directions to create what our elf looked like. The first roll was for the head, the next was for the hat, then the outfit and the final roll was for the legs and shoes. Once our elves were finished it was time to decide what kind of adventure they would go on. Students added to the background of their pictures to show what their elves were up to. Many added details that showed their elf outside at the North Pole or in someone’s house.
Then we started to plan the beginning, middle and end of the adventure. We have worked a lot during reading on retelling, so students were very familiar with thinking about these pieces of a story. Once the plan was complete, it was time to get writing! It was amazing to see the variety of adventures that students took their elves on. One student told the tale of his elf going shopping at Macy’s to buy toys instead of making them himself and another student created a story about a lost elf. Students were able to use all that they know about reading fiction to create a fiction story of their own!
