Building Words to Help Us Grow as Readers

During the beginning of the school year, in some of the younger reading groups, we have been working on building CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words by using our knowledge of letter sounds.

One way we have been building words is by using magnetic letters. After the students have practiced saying the word we are building aloud and heard the word used in a sentence, they begin building their word. They listen for the beginning sound, then add on the middle sound, and finally add the ending sound. Magnetic letters allow students to build words in a fun and hands-on way!

Next, we work on building words using Elkonin boxes. The students and I call these our sound boxes. With Elkonin boxes, the students are sounding out each part of the word and writing down the sound they hear in the corresponding box. After we write our word in our sound boxes, we practice reading our word as we move our finger from left to right under the word. This helps the students to learn that we read and write words going from left to right.

Finally, we are ready to read the words we built with our Student Transfer Cards. This important last step allows students to practice reading words they already said aloud, heard in a sentence, built using magnetic letters, and wrote in their sound boxes. As we practice reading each word more and more, we are able to connect the sounds together more smoothly rather than read the word sound-by-sound.

We are working hard to build words and grow as readers!
