Diving into Reading

The same way we are getting to know as much as we can about each other in our new 6th grade classroom, we are also going beyond the surface to get to know as much as we can about the characters in the books we are reading.

Our first reading unit is focused on analyzing characters in a novel and how they come to life through their thoughts, actions, and interactions as a story develops. As a class we are reading the book Restart by Gordon Korman and students are hooked. Even in the second week of school we are already having amazing discussions sharing about the insights we are gathering about the characters through the details in the book.

Along with reading a class novel, students will analyze a character in their own book and have opportunities to discuss these ideas as well. By doing this, students gain insight on different perspectives and experiences and learn about how characters, just like human beings, can grow and change.
