Building Our Math Fact Fluency

During our Math DEB groups, we have been working on building our fact fluency. To help us with this, we have been doing a variety of activities such as Image Talks, Tool Talks, and playing fact fluency games. It is important for students to have a solid foundation in their basic facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) so that they can apply these facts to solve more complex problems.

During Image Talks, the students are looking at a series of images and discussing what they notice and wonder about the images. In this Image Talk, we were looking at images relating to our 9s facts. The students worked together to find different ways to come up with the total number of stickers on each page.

Tool Talks are similar to Image Talks, but, instead of looking at images with everyday objects, the students are looking at pictures of math tools. In this Tool Talk focusing on 9s facts, the students were working to use the images of centimeter cubes to solve multiplication problems. They were able to break apart each problem using the blue cubes and green cubes and then combine the two sections to find the total.

Math fact fluency games allow for the students to practice their math facts in a fun way. Here were a few of the fact fluency games the students played to practice their 9s facts.
