Sixth graders started their last unit in math: Statistics. We began by looking at statistical and non-statistical questions. We then introduced and defined the vocabulary terms that will be used during this unit: mean, median, range and mode. Students then worked on analyzing data sets and began plotting their points on a Dot Plot. They created a Dot Plot with their group based on the data that was given and we analyzed each scenario to then find the mean, median, range and mode.
Today, students began working on finding the mean of each data set that was given. They were randomly selected to work in groups of 3 at their thinking stations. Each group had to work through 3 sets of scenarios. Some groups were even given an extension to push their thinking even further.
The kids are enjoying working with a new group every day in math. They are super engaged in our thinking classroom and ask great questions when trying to solve each problem. I love how they worked through each scenario by breaking the problem up and finding out what it was asking them to do.
