Underhand throwing/tossing is a BIG skill we work on in the primary age group. We could just toss a ball to our partner or into a bucket, but instead.... lets use animals! And levels! And hula hoops! And so much more!
All week the primary group has been practicing our underhand throwing - 1: recognizing what hand we throw with and then 2: stepping with our opposite foot. We also focus on LOOKING at the target and stepping towards that target.
I often feel like I trick the kids into learning. They think we are just having fun playing a game, but actually we are practicing a certain skill over and over and over again.
We got to collect all of these fun critters while completing tasks. They are so much more excited to get a frog or a fish or an octopus instead of a bean bag or a poly spot as their "point." The kids even had to use a certain object to complete a "level" of the game before moving on to the next "level." Naturally, the levels got harder as they went, so there is a challenge for all the different learners in my classes.

Next week, leading up to Thanksgiving, I created bowling pin turkeys and a giant turkey for our underhand throwing/tossing games. The kids got to see the Giant Turkey today and are even more excited for their PE classes.
A little bit of creativity goes a long way. It makes the kids smile, which makes me smile.
