2nd Graders Love for BrainingCamp!

Second graders are currently learning addition and subtraction within 1,000. One thing we have been working on is being able to use math drawings to represent addition and subtraction. BrainingCamp is a program where they have different math manipulatives students can use to show their thinking. The one we have been using in 2nd grade is the place value disks.

BrainingCamp allows students to understand the place values of the numbers when going to add them. If students were doing a math problem such as 146 + 35, they would show the first number in place value disks, then the second number in place value disks below. This helps build their understanding of the vertical way of solving using addition. One thing they love about BrainingCamp is it allows students to use a ten frame chart so they can easily make that connection that they made 1 ten out of 10 ones. They then can scroll over them and regroup them into a 10. This has truly helped them build their number sense of making bundling 10s and 100s. Once students finish their work, they show their computer with their work to their shoulder partner. Then, we end with me picking someone to display their thinking to the whole class. I love this BrainingCamp feature!

Every day when we are learning math, I now get the question, “Are we using BrainingCamp?” with glowing, excited faces.
