Nursey Rhymes in Disguise

This year during my 1st/2nd grade Differentiated Engagement Block (DEB) we are continuing to use the Primary Education Skills (PETS) program. During this session of DEB we are focusing on visual/spatial thinking. In this type of thinking students work to manipulate shapes mentally. The students were introduced to Max the Magician from Crystal Pond Woods (one of the famous characters from the PETS program) who specializes in visual thinking.

The past week the students have been working to figure out nursey rhymes in disguise. In this lesson figures and shapes are used as clues to capture the story of a nursey rhyme. The students have to observe the details in each frame of the nursey rhyme to figure out which rhyme the figures and shapes are trying to portray. After the students figured out the nursey rhymes in disguise, they were challenged to create their own nursey rhyme in disguise!  The last part was pretty challenging so we practiced creating some together!
