We have a new teacher here at Goodrich! She may only be 8, but I think she did a pretty amazing job! Students have various opportunities to earn a chance to visit the treasure chest which is filled with different small prizes and classroom coupons. One of my favorite coupons in there is to be the teacher for an activity. For this phonics lesson, we started by co-teaching the new phonics skill we were learning and then Miss D took over and ran the dictation portion of the lesson all on her own.
Having a student teach a lesson has SO many benefits! It increases the engagement for the WHOLE class. They are so excited to be learning from one of their peers and are working extra hard so she will call on them. Doing something different also adds some fun into a subject that some students can find to be repetitive. And finally, for my tiny teacher, it gives her a chance to practice her phonics skills at a higher level and also have a leadership role in the classroom. It was her job to explain “the why” and “the how” to students and help them when they got stuck. When students were asking questions about why a word was spelled a certain way, she was answering them using her prior knowledge. Aside from teaching phonics, she was keeping the class focused and on task with her leadership and classroom management skills!
If any Goodrich teachers ever need a substitute, pop on down and grab Miss D from second grade! :)
