Fun with Weaving

Over, under, over, under, over, under, over, under, over... the calming pattern of 2nd grades paper weavings, or what you would see them working on if you stepped into the art room.

Students learned about artists from different cultures who weave using different material, from cotton, wool, and palm leaves, to plastic bags and candy wrappers. They learned how to make their own paper looms, as well as how to weave their paper strips in the over under pattern across their loom. They finished their weavings with added pattern and some chose to add fringe on the edges. Weaving has been good practice for second grade's fine motor skills, patterning, hand eye coordination, and listening skills.
