Yesterday, we celebrated the 100th day of school! According to kindergarten, it was "the best day EVER!!!" It was a great day to celebrate our learning and mastery of counting to 100.
After checking out all of our friends in their 100 year old outfits, our morning began with a hunt around the classroom to find 100 bears. Once each student found six of the bears they need to find the number on the bottom of the bear. At their desk, they placed the bear on the corresponding number on the hundreds chart. After putting all of the bears together on our class hundreds chart, we realized that we were missing ten bears. This was strategic... :) we then needed to figure out which numbers would be on the bottom of the missing bears. The class was so excited to find the missing bears and figure out which numbers were still missing. We are still missing bear 46... this was not planned. :) But it will create some extra excited sometime later in the year when it finally turns up.
Another game we planned was Battleship on a hundreds chart. One student is given ten cubes in order to make 4 different ships. One is a 4 cube ship, another is a 3 cube ship, 2 cube ship, and 1 cube ship. They then hide these ships on their hundreds chart. The other student has to guess numbers to try to hit and sink all of their ships. They already realize how much learning and number sense is occurring as they navigate the hundreds chart to find all the ships.
We continued the 100th day celebration into the afternoon with a variety of motor skill tasks. We worked on fine motor skills by stringing fruit loops to make a necklace. First, the students had to fill a hundreds chart with fruit loops. Then, they were able to string the fruit loops onto a necklace while making sure to use a straw to separate each set of ten. We also had 100 piece puzzles for the kids to assemble as a team. For gross motor practice, we built a tower using 100 cups as well as participating in 100 exercises.
It was so much fun, we were sad to see the day come to an end. If only every day could be a celebration like the 100th day!
