Nonfiction! Nonfiction! Nonfiction!

Here in 1st grade we have been becoming experts on a variety of nonfiction topics during reading AND writing!

In reading, we started off taking sneak peeks to start our learning by looking at the cover/title page, we learned how to study each page by reading words and labels, making predictions of what is going to come next, and ending with making sure our reading voices are sounding smooth. We have been reading and becoming experts on the books Hang On Monkey and Owls. This week during Library check out, students were able to get two nonfiction books! One book that will go home with them like usual, and the other one that they are going to keep here in their book bins to become an expert on a new topic. Some books students checked out were ladybugs, seals, helicopters, bunnies, and so much more!

In writing, we have written two different stories about nonfiction topics, animals and sports!

Our first story we wrote about what their animal looked like, where it lived, and what it eats. When we finished our stories we got to share with our classmates so we could all learn some new facts. Our second story we wrote about what equipment is needed, how you play, and where it is played. Nonfiction writing allows students to tell a story that is 100% factual which means, of course, they aren’t making things up!

This nonfiction unit has been loads of fun so far! We have been able to learn about so many different topics and cannot wait to continue learning more!
