Formations are a great way to get the class up and moving
and cooperating while doing a challenge.
The steps for Formation include:
The teacher announces or displays an object (or shape)
for the students to form. All students move in a position to
form the object or shape. *Students may or may not talk depending on how difficult you would like to make this.
We started inside our classroom. I split the class up into
2 groups first just to practice the concept.
Our first shape was a circle--fairly easy. Then we
graduated to making a rectangle. We chose to
communicate without words and the students did
not disappoint. Students used hand motions to get the members into the given shape.
We then went outside where our challenge was to
make a turkey. The students were allowed to talk,
so they chose to have our Student of the Week be
the turkey and the rest of the students be the feathers.
We did have a little trouble with the feathers--some
students wanted to lay on the ground but it was wet
from the rain, while others wanted to stand to stay clean.
We compromised and the feathers did what they wanted.
I myself, would not have wanted to get dirty!
We then tried an octagon…
And my favorite was a witch’s broom. The children
immediately got into formation--once they figured out
which end was the handle!
Formations will be a structure that we will use in our
curriculum now that we had so much fun making shapes.
We laughed, we got to go outside, and some of us got a little dirty--sounds like the best day ever!
