Truth be told, I am writing this blog at the last minute. Not because I put off writing my blog. I actually had written about something else. But during the day, I got to spend time with this awesome group of 1st graders and decided to write about them instead.
Today in Woodridge, the sky is dark and grey. It’s been raining off and on. It’s cold. That means outdoor recess was cancelled and kids had to stay indoors, which is why I got to spend time with Miss Picciola’s class.
There are many benefits to outdoor recess. Recess plays a critical role in the mental, physical, emotional, and academic development. That's why we try to take the kids outside for recess as much as possible, even in the winter. But since the ground and playground equipment were wet, we kept the kids inside.
The reason I decided to write about them is because I was impressed with their creativity, as well as their ability to entertain themselves. They developed social skills as they talked to each other while they worked. While they weren't able to run around outside, they make the best of situation and still managed to have fun.
