Dr. Seuss’ New Characters

In celebration of Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss’ birthday, Mrs. Sayre had the idea to have students create a new Dr. Seuss character. Before fourth grade began creating their new characters, they needed to explore some of Dr. Seuss’ work for inspiration. They explored some  popular Dr. Seuss books, as well as some background on the man himself for some insight into what kind of characters he included in his stories. We not only took notice of what they looked like, but also what kind of environments they lived in and what traits they often possess.

Students then got right to work with their teammates creating a character out of Legos that they thought could live inside the world that Dr. Seuss has created. Some teams decided to model their characters after ones that already exist, while others made completely new characters. Many teams made great compromises by adding details from all different characters to make a new unique creature. These students put a lot of thought into every detail, including creating a name. When they were all finished, students used Seesaw to take a picture and either write or voice-over their image to explain. I loved seeing my students get creative and work together to make something out of a Dr. Seuss book. What a great way to celebrate Dr. Seuss!
