E-book
or paper- which is best for kids?
A while back
Mrs. Frontera wrote a blog about how much her kids loved using the EPIC reader
for iPads, computers, and smart phones.
I wrote about using apps like these at home in my last blog too. I later saw an article that talked about the
advantages and disadvantages of using technology when reading. I thought what disadvantages? If the child is reading could that be a bad
thing? Literary professors, experts and different
studies have weighed in on the pros and cons of e-readers. One study did find that children from the
ages of 3-5 that were given an electronic device to read to them had lower
comprehension scores. In addition, it
stated that children at this age learn best when they are read to by a parent. No kind of reading is ever bad. We as teachers and parents just need to be
sure to teach the children how to use the electronic equipment, rather than
just handing it off to the child with no supervision or monitoring. Technology is constantly evolving. It’s how we choose to use it that makes the
difference. The evolution of e-books
just changes how we need to approach reading.
No matter
what just keep reading!
