Green Veggie Taste Test in Pre-K

In Pre-K, we have been learning about exercise and other ways to keep our body healthy and strong.  Children have learned different ways they can exercise and how their bodies work when they exercise.  This week, children are learning what their bodies need in order to move and exercise.  We started by discussing how certain toys that we play with need batteries in order to move, and that batteries give the toy power, which is called energy.  We then discussed that people need power for their bodies, too, but we do not get energy from a battery. We instead get energy from the kinds of food we put into our bodies.

First, we talked about how water is a healthy choice for our body because it hydrates us, especially after we have been playing and perspiring.  Next, we talked about food that will give us energy.  Many children named food they like:  cookies, chicken nuggets and pizza.  We discussed that those are nice treat foods, but we need healthy foods to give our bodies the best energy.  We then talked about fruits, vegetables and lean meats.  Today, children were able to have a green veggie taste test and we graphed which veggies we liked the best.  Children tried green bell peppers, broccoli and cucumbers.  After everyone tasted their green veggies, I asked each child which one they liked the best.  Cucumbers were the favorite with broccoli in 2nd place!  Introducing our students to the knowledge of how their bodies stay healthy and strong, and get the best energy, will encourage them to make healthy food choices as they grow older.

Our sample plate.

Litwiller, these veggies are GOOD!

Graphing our favorite veggies.  We got a little math activity in with the taste test, too!
