Jack and the Beanstalk

We are excited to continue our Fairytale Fridays in kindergarten this year! Each Friday, we focus on a classic fairy tale or nursey ryhme. We begin by reading and discussing a fairy tale; then we connect that fairy tale to a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) activity.

This week, we explored Jack and the Beanstalk. The students loved the story! After reading, we built a recreated the castle in the sky by adding a castle to a paper plate and covering it with cotton ball clouds. Then, we created a beanstalk out of construction paper. Students balanced their castles on the beanstalk. As an additional engineering challenge, pairs of students were given 20 magic beans to attempt to balance on top of their castles. We had so much fun working together to find ways to get more and more beans to sit on the plate without tipping over. It was fantastic to see students working together and strategizing the best ways to add beans in order to prevent their castles from falling!
