Developing Dynamic Opinions

In 6th grade, opinion writing is all about expressing your thoughts and, most importantly, backing them up with solid reasons and details. When you write an opinion piece, reasoning is all about giving strong, logical reasons for why you hold that opinion. It's the "because" behind your statement.

This week, students focused on choosing a topic that best interests them. During this activity, students picked a topic they felt strongly about and were asked to support their opinions with detailed reasons. Here are some of the standout ways students used details to strengthen their writing: personal experiences, using facts and research and specific examples.

As students continue to practice their opinion writing, they’ll keep working on using strong details to support their ideas. Whether they’re writing about their favorite foods, their school, or something they’re passionate about, they know that adding details is key to making their writing stand out.
