Creating our very own zoos!

In third grade, we learned about area and perimeter this year. After a lot of practice grasping the concept, we decided to get creative with our math skills! We were tasked by the “mayor” to create zoos with at least 2 large animals, 1 medium animal, and 1 small animal. Students were given a list of how much square units each animal needed for their area. Knowing the area, students had to come up with a length by width that would successfully get that many square units for the animal. For example, a polar bear needed 45 square units so the student would need to pick a length of 5 and a width of 9 for their dimensions. Knowing that information, students could then write down the perimeter calculations.

After finishing all their dimensions, they were given the page to draw out their design. Students were allowed to have extra buildings in their zoos such as a bathroom, food areas, and play areas as long as they had the correct must-haves that the mayor needed. Students had so much fun picking and drawing out their own zoos and got to practice their math skills at the same time!
