Today, Goodrich had a visit from an author who is part of our Woodridge community. This author, Laura Smetana, has written various children's books. What is even more interesting is that she is also the illustrator of her own books and uses cut-paper watercolor collages to create the images for her books.
The Kindergarten and 1st grade students were able to learn about how Laura Smetana started writing stories at the young age of Kindergarten! The students loved being able to see the story that she wrote when she was their age. She continued to show them her work throughout her childhood years and then displayed her current stories for the students to look at. She read the students one of her books titled "My Love for You Is Like a Garden".

After she was done reading, the students participated in a directed drawing, led by the author, to learn how to draw some of the flowers that were seen in her illustrations. The Kindergarten and 1st grade students loved being able to learn about how to create illustrations, what work goes into creating a book, and how they are already authors right now in their own classrooms!
