While this part of the year can be difficult because of the dreary weather and dark days, it also brings about new beginnings and fresh starts. It was so great to see the students again this week and hear all about their time off from school. One of the activities we decided to start 2023 off with was creating self-affirmations.
We read the book, Change Sings by Amanda Gorman. This book tells the story of a young girl who believes that she has the power to change the world, and she tries to inspire others to believe the same within themselves. This launced us into an activity where the students looked within themselves and recogized all that made them who they are. Each student made a circle map with the words "I am..." in the inside circle. Around the "I am...", students wrote words or phrases that described who they are. It was such a breath of fresh air seeing students acknowledge who they are and what they believe to be their strengths.
Once the students finished creating their circle map, I asked them to choose 3-5 "I am" statements to add to their self-affirmation infographic. The students used the prorgram Canva to create a visual reminder of what they are proud of in themselves. The plan is to hang these on each student's locker as a daily reminder of how wonderful each student truly is. My goal for my students and for myself is for all of us to help each other recognize and celebrate who we are and what makes each of us special.
