BATTLE OF THE BOOKS
Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive program for students in 3rd through 6th grades. Students read a collection of books and then come together in groups to demonstrate their abilities and test their knowledge of the books they have read. While the older grades have had the opportunity to participate in this reading program over the past few years, it is the first opportunity for the third grade students to join in the fun.
Fourth through sixth graders have a total of 30 books that need to be read by the students in each group. Most groups equally share the responsibility so a few students in each group become "experts" on between 3-5 books each. Students are also responsible for knowing the author of each book.
Third graders have had the same collection of 12 classic books for several years. ‘This year, Woodridge School District has decided to update the list of books so the students would have the opportunity to read about more current topics with more diverse characters. This new list of books should prove appealing to today’s third graders with topics that are easier for them to relate to.

This year's third grade list |
Students in Mrs. Schneider’s class had the opportunity today to hear a brief summary of each book. After Mrs. Sayre finished her book talk, it was not surprising that every student in our class chose to join this voluntary competition. When we returned to our class, the students were eager to create groups and pick out their favorite books to read.
Students created teams of eight students. These students have been asked to each read a minimum of 4 books from the list. In April, all third grade teams at Goodrich will compete by answering comprehension questions about these books. The winning team will then be invited to a district level battle to test their skills against third graders from elementary schools in the district where they can win bragging rights for a job well done! Get ready to battle!
