Thanksgiving in December

If there is Christmas in July, then I can certainly write about Thanksgiving in the
month of December.  Well, not entirely about Thanksgiving. Mostly turkeys. Well,
trying to catch them….

The challenge for the first graders was to design a trap that would capture
a turkey. Not to eat (nobody wanted that), but to catch as a pet. Each group was
given the same materials:
Pipe cleaners
Masking tape
1 long piece of yarn
1 cardboard box at the very minimum
35 minutes

Students needed to work together to design, make and try out their trap within
35 minutes. (yes we went longer because we lost track of time....)
Some students set out to draw a diagram, others took boxes and started to cut
them out, while other students made the turkey out of paper to have something to
trap.

Then students put the traps into action.  Some had to do several attempts and go back to the drawing board.  Other groups pitched in to make sure it was working.

Even though we did not really catch a turkey, what we did catch was teamwork, kindness, and a lot of fun!
