The Importance of Reading Nonfiction
On average, students spend less than 4 minutes with informational text each day during independent reading, teacher read-alouds, and writing activities (Goodwin, 2013). However, research has shown that reading nonfiction helps students develop their background knowledge. In the upper elementary grades, background knowledge becomes crucial. Students begin to read more content-specific books, as well as headings, graphs, charts, and other elements that are not found in narrative writing. For students to being developing background knowledge, they must be exposed to nonfiction texts in the early grades.
