Fourth grade students worked to create handmade items that they then sold in the gym during lunch periods. The goal was to raise money for those less fortunate than us. They were able to raise $250! Our PTO and a private donor gave more. The students decided to give the money to Feed My Starving Children. This giving experience was capped off by a field trip to their facility where we helped to pack 165 boxes of food for those affected by hunger and starvation in many third world countries.
This activity was followed up by a special night for parents and students-STEM Family Night. This was a time to challenge our selves to learn more through Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The families rotated through the activities to experience and enjoy their time together. In science they built their own thermometers and went home with further exploration options. In technology they learned and experienced the many tech tools that students use in the school. Engineering activities were provided by the Woodridge Public Library this year and the students were engaged in building. And finally, in math, the families were able to "break out" of their learning by doing math problems to enter a box with prizes!
Following STEM night we jumped both feet into our grade level Battle of the Books. This is a program where groups of eight students are invited to read books and answer comprehension questions about those books. They have to battle first at their grade level and then at the building level for bragging rights and to go to a district level battle at the junior high.
Throughout the week we have been running the 3D printer to print the designs that the sixth grade students did in the Art room. They are turning out really well.
Next, we began teaching the kindergarten students how to login to a Chrome book for the first time. They were able to login and open up the Chrome browser to logon to a website! They did a great job!
And of course we checked out books, helped both students and teachers with projects and overall had a great week!
