Preschool Clothing Unit

Pre-K students have been working on their clothing unit.  Some of the topics children have focused on include learning about different kinds of clothing, the importance of clothing fitting on your body appropriately, how each piece of clothing has a purpose and how to properly take care for your clothing.  On Valentine’s Day, Pre-K students celebrated by enjoying a special snack with a connection to their clothing unit.

When children were learning about how to care for their clothing, one thing we learned from our book, Wash and Dry, is that it is important to separate certain clothing before you wash it so the different colors do not change the colors of other clothing in the washing machine.  We discussed how if you left a red shirt in with your white socks while they were being washed, the socks would turn pink from the dye on the red shirt.

On Valentine’s Day, the children were able to enjoy a special snack: a nice big sugar cookie!  Before they could enjoy their snack, we needed to discuss how this was connected to our clothing unit.  Children were told they were going to be able to decorate their cookies with frosting, but first, we were going to talk about how red dye can change the color of something white to a different color.  Children excitedly gathered around our table to observe how the frosting was going to change.

First, we referred to the page in our book, Wash and Dry, that taught us how clothing can change colors if the laundry is not sorted appropriately.  Children saw that the frosting was white when I took it out of the container and placed it in the bowl.  Next, I showed the children the red food coloring and asked them what they thought would happen when I added a few drops of food coloring to the white frosting.  They guessed correctly and said that it would turn to a different color.  Some children thought it would turn pink, and some thought the frosting would turn red.  I explained that I was only going to add a few drops, so it might be a lighter color.  Once I added the drops and stirred the frosting, it started to change!  The frosting slowly turned into a lovely pink!  The kids were very excited to see the frosting change before their eyes, and saw first hand how the dye would turn something white to a different color.  Once I was done mixing the frosting, each of the children received a dollop of frosting and a generous amount of sprinkles to decorate their special snack.  It was a wonderful and fun way to connect our learning to our special snack!
