During a math intervention group, we have been using ten frames to help us add ten and some more. We began by looking at ten frames together and talking about number sentences that we could write to match each picture. We remembered that in an addition number sentence, we can switch the two numbers we are adding and still get the same sum.
After we looked at ten frames together, the students made their own ten frame models and wrote number sentences to go with their pictures. The students worked on making a group of ten and then adding a few more on to the group of ten. After the students made their own ten frame problems, they presented their ten frame model and number sentences to the group.
Finally, the students played a math fluency game called “The Teen Game.” With this game, the students rolled a ten-sided dice numbered 0-9 to create a two-digit number. Then the students looked at the game board to find the ten frame picture that represented their number and covered up that spot with their counter. Next, the students wrote down a number sentence that went with the ten frame picture. The students continued to take turns playing the game. Each player was trying to get three counters in a row going across, down, or diagonally as many times as possible. The students enjoyed playing a game with a partner while also building their confidence in using ten frames and writing number sentences to represent the problem.
