Fourth graders have been working on fractions in math class. We have been comparing fractions, adding, subtracting and multiplying fractions throughout the past few weeks. Today students were able to practice more with comparing fractions greater than one by playing a game called
"Fraction Number Battle"
Students worked in pairs and each pair had a deck of cards. They had to first divide the cards evenly between themselves and then each student kept their cards in a single pile, facing down.
Each student would pick two cards off the top of their pile and then arrange them in a way where they would make the biggest possible fraction with the two cards that they picked from the top. Both students would place their cards in the middle displaying their card for the numerator on top, and their card for the denominator on the bottom.
(Students were informed that the cards that did not have numbers were valued as ace=1, jack=11, queen=12, and king=13)
Once each student had their cards in the middle, the students had to decide which fraction is bigger and the player whose fraction has the greatest value takes all of the cards and placed them at the bottom of their pile.
Students were also given fraction tile pieces to build out their fractions to compare them with the manipulatives if they needed that as some assistance for some of the fractions they were comparing.
