Theme Across Picture Books

 

4th graders have been working on determining the theme of a variety of texts. Previously, they have determined the theme of Pixar clips, chapters in "Wonder", and began discussing what themes they see in their Book Club book.

Recently, they looked at and read a variety of picture books and discussed possible themes of the books they read.

Students were able to discuss how one story can have multiple themes and how similar themes can be seen across a variety of texts.

They were able to not only get a good understanding of the theme through the characters and details taking place in the story, but also the images throughout the story helped them make inferences about how the characters were feeling.

Next, students will take a look at determining themes they see in poems.
