This week we had the pleasure of hosting Steve Campbell of Dancing Drum in two World Music assemblies at our school. He took us on a tour of West Africa, the Caribbean and South America and all the great rhythms they have to offer. In order to receive this amazing experience for our kids, the music departent wrote a grant proposal to the amazing Dupage Foundation and were given the opportunity to work with "Mr. Steve" for a total of seven years. This year was our fourth year with him in our district and students and staff had a blast creating music with him, yet again!
The first of our two assemblies were for our primary aged students in grades Pre-K through 3rd grade. In our one hour assembly he was able to give a turn at the large Dun Dun drums, the maracas (shakers) or woodblocks for EVERY child in the gym that wanted a chance (which was basically all of them!) We created some amazing music together using the boom (low) and ba (high) sounds of our unique instruments. We had dancers, a conga line and even some of our amazing teachers got up to join in on the fun!
Our second assembly was for our intermmediate grades 4th through 6th. These students had a chance to learn about the music of these continents and countries with some more rigorous and age appropriate rhythms that gave them a nice challenge and kept them engaged. It was incredible to see so many students wanting a chance to play and they were all miles of smiles. We even got Dr. Scaletta to play on the lead drums and we all had a fantastic time showing the kids just how fun we all are too!
Please enjoy the pictures and some videos of this wonderful event, we can't wait to have him back next year!
