Vocabulary is a key component for success in reading fluency and comprehension. There are various word-learning strategies that help with vocabulary development. One strategy is sketching. Many students find it easier to remember the definition of a word by drawing a quick sketch that connects the word to something meaningful to them.
We used this strategy to frontload vocabulary words for 3rd grade students in Mrs. Hall’s class, which we co-teach together. We started off introducing a vocabulary word for a folktale we were going to read. After introducing the word, students shared what they thought the word meant. We then told them the definition of the word and used it in a sentence. This was a great way for Mrs. Hall and I to assess what students already know and talk about some of the incorrect definitions they gave.
After learning and discussing the new vocabulary, students drew a picture that represents each word. Drawing pictures deepens understanding and improves recall of the vocabulary.
