Service Learning Was DogTastic!

First grade is known for being the Puppy Pound! We decided to connect our Service Learning project to what first graders are known to love here at Goodrich-Puppies! Well, not just puppies but cats, dogs, kittens and puppies. We did a service learning project for the West Suburban Animal Shelter.

Our first graders worked so hard, and worked as a team to create toys that the cats and dogs at the shelter would be able to use and play with while they lived there waiting for their forever family.

We did research, we collected donations of supplies and we used our own hands to craft these amazing toys.

The experience did not stop there. We were invited to visit the West Suburban Animal Shelter to hand these donations over in person. While we were there, we had a tour of the amazing, newly renovated facility. We were able to see where the animals live, play, eat and get adopted. It was an experience that will last a lifetime.

Once returning to school we reflected on the experience and our part in the donation process. The students were so thrilled to have played a role in the service process and I’m SURE some students went home and asked to go adopt one of the sweet animals that we had the pleasure of meeting!
