Hydroponic Farming

6th graders just finished a Science unit on Earth's Changing Climate and Hydroponic Farming. After learning causes and effects of climate change, we brainstormed ways to help. We learned that food insecurities are happening due to inclement weather effecting crop growth. Hydroponic Farming is a way to farm locally indoors without the use of soil. Therefore, limiting travel and harmful effects from extreme weather.

Students learned the process of Hydroponic Farming and have successfully began a system in each of the 6th grade classrooms. Students have cleaned, set up, and maintained the lettuce growing in the system. Once ready, students will harvest the lettuce and prepare to donate it to the local food pantry.

Last week, we took a field trip to Plant Chicago. We connected our learning to how they are working to develop methods for sustainable food production, energy conservation and material reuse.
