When you have a short week of school due to parent-teacher conferences,
and students have just changed seats, it seems like the perfect time to do a
team-building activity.
And penny stacking seemed like something crazy enough to do.
The idea was sparked after reading Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon as a mentor text for our
realistic fiction unit. The class was cracking up after all of the talents that Molly
displayed in the story.
In the story, Molly has buck teeth and she does not let that get in her way–when a
student makes fun of her about her teeth, she very quickly stacks ten pennies on her
teeth. The class in the story is in awe. We did not stack pennies on our
teeth (that would be gross!) but we did stack pennies on our fingertips!
One person stacked the pennies, one at a time, with the help of their teammates. It was
too hard to hold your hand steady with a penny while trying to pick up more pennies
to add to the stack.
We recorded the amount we stacked….
And then students wanted to see what else they could stack…should have hidden the
dominoes and dice!
