Noticing Character Change through Details

In fourth grade, we recently began our third reading unit focusing on detail and synthesis. In this unit, students are reading fiction books that matter to them, developing on previously learned skills such as inferencing and interpretation. In addition, fourth graders will grow big ideas about characters in their books, focusing on details such as a character's traits, motivations, and changes over time.

Last week, fourth graders spent time independently reading their own fiction books and determining what they currently do well as readers (noticing details, identifying theme, rereading for better understanding). Then, while reading independently, students focused on one character in their book, logging any new information and thoughts in their reader's notebook.

This week, fourth graders grew their thinking by noticing changes in their book's character. Before independent reading, students shared their notes on their book character with their shoulder partner. Then, while independently reading, they took note of any changes in their character, such as behavior, thoughts, and motivation. The changes students are identifying in their characters are determined through the details in the story; they cite evidence from the text to support their thinking.

To share their findings on their book characters, fourth graders engaged in a Mix-Pair-Share, high-fiving the closest classmate to them once playing music stopped. Students were excited to share their knowledge on their book character, as well as how they have changed from the beginning. Some fourth graders have even wanted to check out their peer's book from the library!
