To celebrate Black History Month and launch our next writing unit all about nonfiction writing, here in 2nd grade we did some research on people well known for something special using books from our Goodrich library. I placed the books spread out on the carpet, and called students to come and see who they might be interested in researching about. Some of these people included Odell Beckham Jr., Beyonce, Martin Luther King Jr., and Simone Manuel. From there, students had to read their book and become an “expert” on this person.
Once they knew a lot about that person, they started on their planning page. As seen below, students had to tell who the person was, when they were born and until they lived to, what they’re most known for, and then 3 facts about the person. My class was so interested in learning about their person!
After their planning pages, we decided to make these experts take it one step further. As a whole second grade, we had one flip document. There, students recorded themselves talking about who they researched and what they learned. Students from the other classes could then watch these, and respond with comments. We talked about what a strong comment looked like, and I was impressed with their comments to one another. We plan to display the planning pages and flip QR codes in the hallway during parent teacher conferences this week! Scan the QR below to see one of the student’s video.
