Deepening Our Understanding of Nonfiction Texts

Nonfiction helps children develop critical thinking skills, as well as the ability to read and understand more complex texts. In fourth grade, we have been learning how to read nonfiction texts deeply. We have been focusing on nonfiction text features, as well as structures that help us determine what the text is trying to teach us. such as problem/solution, cause/effect, and sequence.

To start the unit, students chose nonfiction texts to preview on different types of extreme weather. Then, after surveying their weather interests, students were placed in groups (hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, blizzards, tsunamis, and earthquakes). Before researching their extreme weather, students learned to notice the way a text is organized and structured to determine the most important information. Each group member then chose a text structure to help guide their note taking. Students used nonfiction texts, as well as reliable websites for researching.

Last week, groups began creating a presentation for their weather. Fourth graders are using their structured notes to create an informational Google Slides presentation to share with their classmates. Their presentations include prevention and safety tips, firsthand experiences, causes/effects, and comparing/contrasting their weather to another (i.e. hurricanes and tornadoes).
