College and Career Fridays

For the past few years, our school has participated in “College and Career Fridays.” We sport clothing associated with a career or a college that has meaning and importance to us, but beyond that, we also dive deep into specific colleges and careers.

In first grade this year, we have decided to spend these Fridays focusing on a career, learning facts about it, and doing an activity or event associated with that career.

To begin, we had the students come up with careers of interest and we filled a jar with these ideas. Each week, we select a career of interest from the jar and explore and learn everything we can about that career.

Last week was College and Career Friday. This one took a little more preparation than just choosing from the jar and getting started! We invited Firefighter Scott from the LWFD to our school to teach us about fire safety and what it takes to be a firefighter.

We couldn’t have had a better time hearing safety facts and learning along with Firefighter Scott! He taught us the importance of having a working smoke detector in our homes, a plan to safely evacuate in case of an emergency, and the phrase, “Stay low and go” if we experience smoke in our homes and need to get out.

He dressed up from head to toe in his fire gear to show us that if we ever encounter a firefighter in an emergency, it is just a helpful firefighter inside and we should not be scared of them. They are there to get us out of the fire safely. At the end, we gave Firefighter Scott a drawing our class made together of a firefighter we thought he could hang up at the fire station to remember us!

We love College and Career Fridays, but we think this one was our favorite so far!
