Balloons Over Broadway Read Aloud
Third-grade teachers have been creating standards-based activities that pair with popular picture books used in our classroom. Exposing our students to authentic children’s literature is incredibly valuable. These activities include vocabulary words, thought-provoking questions, determining the main idea with supporting details, and the theme or lesson of the book.
This past week, we read Balloons Over Broadway, by Melissa Sweet. This is the true story of Tony Sarg, the puppeteer of Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Aside from discussing vocabulary and questions, students also completed a STEM activity and decorated balloons for our own parade.
Without realizing it, the second graders also created balloons with their fourth-grade buddies. What fun it was to parade through the school with all three grades together!
