What do all of these fonts have in common?
5th graders were asked the same question in art class, and they came to the conclusion that they would not want to be in business with any of these companies because the fonts give you the opposite feeling that they should. We learned how important font choice is for any design that they create.
After a more general font discussion, we then focused on one particular font design style that 5th grade always finds intriguing, graffiti. We learn the difference between street art, legal graffiti, and illegal graffiti, as well as the history of graffiti, why artists create graffiti, and where we may see graffiti. Students practice drawing multiple types of graffiti style fonts and will soon start creating their own graffiti work of art on a piece of paper (and though it would be really cool, not on a spray-painted wall).
