At the beginning of the year, it’s important to take time and get to know everyone in your class. It’s also important to remember that the people around you are part of your team and are on your side. One way in 2nd grade we build that team up is by coming up with a team name and then a team poster after settling in and getting to know more about the people at our table.
To start, students had a pile of post its and time to do jot thoughts independently with ideas of team names. Each post it gets a different idea, and this is done silently and on their own. When time was up, they went around the table reading their ideas and came up with a team consensus of the one they all agreed with. Some of these names included “Team Black Cats” and “Team Cotton Candy” to show what they all liked. After, teams were given a white construction piece and everyone at the table received a printed apple to color and cut so that way they all had at least one thing to contribute to the team poster. Students had so much fun coming up with names and posters! They now hang above their tables to remind them of their team!
