Phonics Fun

In phonics, we have been learning all about special vowel sounds (au/aw, ou/ow, oi/oy, oo). We practiced each pair in isolation, both reading and writing words with the special vowel sounds. Reading and writing these words can be particularly tricky since the two sets of letters are making the same sound. Once we learned about all 5 sounds, it was time for more practice and what better way to practice than with games! Over the last two weeks we introduced three different phonics games and today students had the chance to practice all three! My students couldn’t wait to get started this morning!

Students played Planet Hop to practice the oi and oy sound.

Students played BAM! to practice the au/aw and ou/ow sounds.

Students played Old Hoot to practice both sounds of oo.

Not only were students able to practice their new phonics skills, but they were also able to practice turn taking and winning and losing.
