Kindergarten Authors

Kindergarten students have been working on writing their own “How-To” informational texts. To start out our unit, students learned about how important it is to be specific with the steps they are writing. The students were the guide in helping their teacher make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. They quickly learned, when I began to spread the peanut butter with my hand, that they needed to be specific and tell me exactly what to use when spreading the peanut butter on the sandwich. Then, they were a little more careful with their steps!

After this hands-on, interactive activity, the Kindergarten students worked together to write a How-To as a class about how to brush their teeth. We picked an activity that we all know how to do and that we are very familiar with because we do it each day! Working together, sounding out the words we were writing, and using our sight words, the Kindergarten students were able to create a great piece of writing.

Finally, the Kindergarteners were ready to make their own How-To! Each student was able to pick their topic and we brainstormed first on what our steps would be for our How-To. The Kindergarteners took their time to make sure the steps were easy to follow and went in the order needed. We have also been working on making our pictures very detailed so it shows exactly what the reader needs to do. Some of the How-To’s that Kindergarten wrote included: how to plant a flower, how to make cookies, how to walk your dog, and how to play basketball.

Our favorite part about this process is our author party at the end! This week, students are going to be taking turns sharing their How-To’s with the class and cheering for each other’s hard work!
