Superbowl Subtraction

Last week in 2nd grade we finished up our 3 digit Addition and Subtraction unit in math. We reviewed for the test for a few days beforehand, but my teaching partner and I decided they needed some more engaging ways to review. We came up with a Superbowl themed review game, and the students loved it!

They worked with a partner using a Kagan structure called Sage-n-Scribe. In this structure, one student is the "sage" and one is the "scribe," meaning that the sage verbally tells the scribe what to write down and how to solve the problem. They switch roles after each problem, and coach each other when needed if one partner is stuck. We created a review packet of addition and subtraction, and they got to work.

Students were given one paper to solve the problems, and another for the Superbowl game! Once they solved a problem, they would come check their answer with me. If it was correct, they went up to our football stadium and threw three beanbags. They added up their points, then returned back to their seats to solve another problem. At the end of the review game, students added up how many points they earned. These two were our Superbowl Champs!
