Reading Nonfiction for Fun

A cold January is the perfect time to explore books to learn a new craft, skill or learn how to do something new. Students read nonfiction for a variety of reasons, but this week we explored the 700's section of the library. This section houses many of our "how to" books. Students were reintroduced to these books that offer a wide range of subjects.

In second grade we explore how to do magic tricks. We read My First Guide to Magic Tricks by Norm Barnhart and Steve Charney. One of the tricks in the book is An Elephant Every Time. We read through the directions and then practiced doing the trick by ourselves. Next, the students took turns practicing on each other by turning their backs while their partner mixed up the picture cards used.

Finally, students were given an extra trick to take home to their families. They loved learning a new skill. The following day they were in the library to check out books and almost every student headed to the 700 section of the library to choose another book to check out. Magic tricks, drawing and crafts such as knitting and crocheting were some of the favorites!
