Measuring!

Here in 1st grade math we just started our ordering and comparing length unit! So far my students have loved getting to compare pictures/items to see what is shorter or longer. We just introduced centimeter cubes and started by measuring simple desk items like a sharpened pencil and crayons.  We did a rotation measuring activity where each student at their pod got a bag with one item in it (pencil, glue stick, marker, and an expo marker). Each student got two minutes to measure the item in their bag and record the number of centimeter cubes it took to get from endpoint to endpoint. After the time was up, the bag with the object in it rotated to the next person. We continued this rotation until all students got to measure all four objects. My students have been loving this hands-on unit so far and it has been great watching them be so careful when placing their cubes to make sure they are measuring with no gaps or overlaps! When this activity was completed and all objects were measured, students got to compare answers with their face partners since they all measured the same things!

Measuring the dry erase marker!

Carefully measuring with no gaps and making sure end points are lined up!

All smiles for measuring her glue stick with rainbow colors!

We can't wait to continue this hands-on math unit and measure more things!
