Should the Pigeon Get to Stay Up Late?

We recently started a new opinion writing unit in first grade. We began this unit by thinking about which of 2 things we liked better and reasons why. As students became more familiar with this type of writing we decided to take our opinions to the next level.

Our class loves the Pigeon series by Mo Willems, so what better way to level up our writing than to write about our reading! I read the book Don’t Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late to my students. Then we recorded all the reasons Pigeon gave for why he should get to stay up late on a circle map. Students were quick to remember many reasons why Pigeon should stay up late such as he wanted to have a hot dog party, he wanted a glass of water, and that it was the middle of the day in China. I then told students to think about reasons why Pigeon should NOT get to stay up late. Again they were quick to come up with ideas! Their ideas included he would wake up cranky the next morning, he might wake up late, and he was yawning during the story so he might be tired.

After all this great brainstorming it was time for students to decide if Pigeon should or should not be able to stay up late. Each student recorded their decision and a reason why on Pigeon’s bed. Here are some of the final products.
